‘go to bed’ in Hungarian

Ezt a viccet ma a Facebook oldalamon posztoltam. Te hogyan mondanád, hogy ‘I’m going to bed’? 🙂

Today I posted this joke on my Facebook page and I asked my followers to provide possible translations to the English sentence.

 

Before you read on:

How would YOU say it in Hungarian? 🙂

 

I got the solution ‘Elmegyek aludni’ and ‘Aludni megyek’ (I am going to sleep).

They are both correct and maybe the most frequent way we say ‘I am going to bed’ is the first one.

 

But how else could we express this same meaning?

 

Another very frequent word we often say: ‘Lefekszem.’ (I lie down). This means ‘I go to bed’ too.

 

BUT be careful!!!

You can not say ‘Ágyba megyek’. This sentence has a sexual connotation. Translating word by word from your native language might time after time cause you problems 🙂 

 

Less frequent expressions:

Instead of the not recommended ‘ágyba megyek’ you could say ‘Ágyba bújok’ – I tuck myself into bed / I snuggle up in bed which already means you will most probably also sleep.

If you are planning to take just a short nap, you might say: ‘Lepihenek’. (I take some rest)

Or: ‘Ledőlök’, ‘Egy kicsit ledőlök’ (I fall / collapse / lean onto my bed a little bit – a funny picture if you imagine it, but it does not mean that one really collapsed 🙂 just went to have a kip)

In poetic language you might read: ‘Nyugovóra térünk’ (we go/start to rest) or ‘Aludni tér’ (he goes to sleep) 

 

And some funny ones:

‘Elteszem magam holnapra’ – I preserve (put away) myself for tomorrow

‘Vízszintesbe helyezkedem’ – I take up a horizontal position.

Maybe not about yourself, but about someone else you could say: ‘Elnyúlt’ – He stretched out 🙂 /I could imagine a cat here, but we say this about people too 🙂 /

4. Ki nyújt előbb kezet?

Who should offer to shake hands?

(kezet nyújt – to give, offer your hands, literally: to strech your arms towards the other person)

 

Az nyújt előbb kezet (az ajánlja fel a kezét kézfogásra), akinek előre köszöntek.

That person offers his/her hand who is greeted first.

A nő nyújt előbb kezet a férfinak. The woman offers her hand to a man.

A felnőtt nyújt kezet a gyereknek. An adult offers his/her hand to a child.

Az idős nyújt kezet a fiatalnak. The older person offers his/her hand to the younger person.

 

A kézcsók már divatjamúlt. Kissing one’s hand is old-fashioned.

 

 

Természetesen a 3. és a 4. szabály nincs kőbe vésve. Ma már vannak olyan helyzetek, amelyekben erre nem figyelnek. Régen emiatt megsértődtek volna, ma már nem valószínű.

The 3rd and 4th rules are not set in a stone. Today there may be situations when one might not pay attention to this. In the olden days people would be offended, but today it is not likely.

5. Ki megy előre?

Who goes in first?

 

Ki megy be először egy ismert vagy egy ismeretlen helyre?

Ez picit vita is szokott lenni.

Who goes in to a known or unknown place first? This question may serve as the reason of some arguments.

 

A nő mindig minden ismert helyre előbb megy be. A férfi előre engedi.

The woman is the first to enter every known place. The man gives way to her.

 

Azonban ha a nő nem akar előre menni, akkor a férfi megy előre. Vannak olyan helyzetek, amikor ez a nő számára kellemetlen, esetleg fél előre menni.

But if the woman does not want to be the first to go in, then the man has to. There may be situations when being the first to enter a place is unpleasant for the woman or she is afraid.

 

Minden ismeretlen helyre a férfinak illik bemenni. Mi van, ha a kocsmában éppen verekednek? A férfi megvédi a nőt azáltal, hogy ő megy be előbb! 🙂

The man enters every unknown place first. What if there is a fight in the pub? The man protects the woman by going in first.

 

Aki kisgyerekkel van, azt illik előre engedni.

Idős személyt illik előre engedni.

It is good manners to let those go first who are with small children or who are old.

 

 

6. Kérlek / kérem, légy szíves / legyen szíves

When you ask for something use these words… please (informal and formal)

Nyaralás vagy szabadság? Ünnep?!

Magyarul a nyaralás és a szabadság nem ugyanaz. Hát még az ünnep. Ezeket a szavakat diákjaim gyakran nem jól használják.

 

A nyaralás:

Mindig nyáron van. A magyarok általában a Balatonon vagy a tengeren nyaralnak, de sokan szeretik a gyógyfürdőket és egyéb tavakat, folyókat is. Van olyan is, aki a nagyszülőkhöz megy nyaralni.

 

A szabadság:

Az év bármely napján lehet. Az ember ezen a napon a munka alól szabad. A szabadság lehet mindösszesen 1 nap is, de akár 2-3 hét is.

Aki szabadságon van, az nem dolgozik, viszont lehet, hogy otthon ül és nem nyaral.

 

Nyaralás vs szabadság:

Aki nyaral, az tehát elutazik pihenni. Bár még az is lehet, hogy a nyaraláson valaki dolgozik 2 koktél és egy kis úszás  között!

 

Aki szabadságra megy, az biztos, hogy nem dolgozik, de nem biztos, hogy nyaral. Főleg, ha a szabija nem nyáron van. Bár lehet télen is utazni, de az nem nyaralás.

 

 

Ünnep:

Az ünnep mindig egy olyan nap az évben, amit több ember együtt ünnepel.

Ünnepek: születésnap, névnap, Újév, Karácsony, nemzeti ünnepek (március 15., augusztus 20., október 6. stb.)

 

Nincs a magyar nyelvben “bank holiday“. Nálunk nemzeti ünnepek és munkaszüneti napok vannak. Egyes országokban a nőnap is munkaszüneti nap, de Magyarországon nem. Nem minden ünnep munkaszüneti nap tehát.

 

 

Szavak:

nyaralás – summer holiday

nyaral – to spend the holiday

nyaralni megy (valahová) – to go on holiday (somewhere else)

nyár – summer

szabadság – holiday, leave (no work)

szabadságon van – to be on holiday, to be on leave, to be out of office (may stay at home)

szabadságra megy – to take some time off, to go on leave, to go on holiday (does not mean spending holiday somewhere differen than home)

szabi – szabadság (szleng)

szabad – free

ünnep – holiday, feast, holy day (a special day that a group of people celebrates)

ünnepel – to celebrate

nemzeti ünnep – national holiday (we commemorate important days from our history)

munkaszüneti nap – bank holiday (a day when nobody works and shops are closed)

 

 

Sokkal + -bb

One of the mistakes my students tend to make (almost all of them) is with adjectives.

When they want to say “a lot bigger” or “much smaller” they say “nagyon nagyobb, nagyon kisebb”, and this is incorrect.

The following picture shows you that the proper form here is “sokkal nagyobb, sokkal kisebb”.

Possessive singular in Hungarian

 

So how do you say that you possess something? How would you say that have got a dog or a cat or a house?

The verb “van” is used to express the existence.

Use “Van egy” in these sentences with the appropriate possessive ending on the object:

 

“Van egy kutyám.” means “I have a dog”.

“Van egy kutyád.” means “you have a dog”.

etc.

 

 

 

What if you want to say you do not have something? Use the negation of “van”. There is no such an expression in Hungarian like “nem van”, instead of this we use another word: “Nincs”. This word (which means “there is not” and is used to deny the existence of something) you will use without the article “egy” in the following sentences.

 

 

You can emphasize the owner/possessor by adding the following declined pronouns:

nekem – for me

neked – for you

neki – for him/her

 

nekünk – for us

nektek – for you pl.

nekik – for them

 

Remember, it is not neccessary to use these declined pronouns, but you can. Sometimes you need to emphasize as in the following example where two children are having an argument over a ball.

Van egy labdám. – I have got a ball.

Nem! Nekem van egy labdám! – No, it is me, who has got a ball. (No, I have a ball!)

 

 

Or you can emphasize that you don’t have something.

 

Tudom, hogy van egy labdád. – I know, that you have got a ball.

Nekem nincs labdám! – I do not have a ball!!

 

Next time we will learn the possessive of nouns that end in consonants!!!

2. Do you have an apple? (remember, yes or no questions have the same word order as declarative sentences!)

3. They don’t have a radio

5. She has a grandchild.

6. You (pl.) don’t have a Hungarian lesson today.
